Snehasish Ganguly, the brother of cricketer Sourav Ganguly, and his wife Arpita narrowly avoided drowning in Odisha on Sunday after their motorboat overturned in the ocean. While on vacation in Puri, the Gangulys were having fun on the beach doing water sports when the tragedy happened. In a widely shared video, lifeguards attempt to save passengers while the speedboat is upside down in the choppy seas. They were rescued by officials using rubber floats.

Arpita claimed that because of its lighter weight and smaller passenger capacity, the boat overturned. She gave credit to the lifeguards for their prompt action in saving their lives during a near-miss. Ms Ganguly said, "The sea was already very rough. There was a capacity of 10 people on the boat, but due to the greed for money, they allowed only three to four people on board. This was the last boat to go into the sea for the day. We had raised concerns over going into the sea, but the operators told us that it is fine."

She further added, "If the lifeguards had not come, we would not have been saved. I'm still in trauma...never faced something like this. If there were more people on the boat, maybe it would not have flipped. Authorities should ban these sports here. Puri beach has a very rough sea. I will write a letter to the Superintendent of Police and the Chief Minister once I go back to Kolkata, asking them to stop watersports here."

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area is anticipated to develop over the west-central region and the adjacent north Bay of Bengal, bringing with it heavy rainfall in coastal Odisha. This week, considerable rainfall is expected in various areas of the state, according to the national weather forecaster. Rainfall is predicted for Puri, Khurdah, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri districts on Wednesday, and for Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Koraput districts on Tuesday.
