After agreeing to join the board of the Centre for Australia-India Relations (CAIR), a government-backed organisation founded in 2013, former Australian captain Steve Waugh plans to travel to India next month. He has visited India "about 40-50 times" in the past 40 years and has played against several greats, including Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, and Sunil Gavaskar.

Waugh views India as his second home, having travelled there over 40–50 times in the last 40 years. He claimed that having a lot of close friends in India was a major factor in his choice to join CAIR. Waugh also expressed his opinions about the lack of cricket matches between India and Pakistan, saying it is unfortunate that the two countries no longer routinely play one another. He emphasised the significance of rekindling the rivalry and stated his readiness to contribute to the use of sport to strengthen ties between the two nations.

Steve Waugh Gets Candid:

Talking to the Indian Express, Waugh said, “I am like the 12th man on the (CAIR) team at the moment, learning how it all operates… It’s great to be part of it… Obviously, an unbelievable relationship with India for over 40 years. I thought it was a great thing to be part of continuing to strengthen the relationship between Australia and India. Huge opportunities going forward. And if I can play a part in that, then I’m happy.”

Waugh, who is well-known for being called the "Iceman" for maintaining his cool under pressure on the field, emphasised the important role that sport plays in fostering closer ties between Australia and India. Additionally, he explained that he is picky about the responsibilities he accepts, stating that he does not serve on many boards and would rather limit his time to things that he is truly enthusiastic about.
