The hosts chose to bat after winning the toss to start the game. But as the visitor's bowling attack—which included Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj—ravaged the opposing batting order, their choice backfired catastrophically. Bangladesh was bundled for just 106 runs, with the only noteworthy inning being the 30-run knock from Mahmudul Hasan Joy.

At the crease were David Bedingham (9*) and Tony de Zorzi (19*) as Proteas reached 65/2 in 16 overs before tea on Day 1.
