India got off to a flying start in their second innings of the fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Day 2. The 23-year-old left-hander blasted Australian pacer Mitchell Starc for four fours in his first over. Jaiswal, India's leading run-scorer in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, backed himself and took some big risks against the in-form pacer. He opened his account with a boundary on the second ball and added four runs on the third and fourth balls. The move paid off, as India established dominance in their second innings from the start.
Jaiswal was beaten by an extra bounce on the fifth ball of Starc's first over, but on the final ball, he smashed another boundary for 16 runs. Jaiswal attempted another boundary off the sixth ball, but the extra bounce halted his progress. The 23-year-old could only connect with thin air. The Mumbai hitter left his best for last, hitting a booming drive all along the carpet through extra cover for the fourth boundary of the over.

Jaiswal made history by hitting 16 runs off six balls in the opening over of India's second innings. The young Mumbai native, who made his Test debut against the West Indies in July 2023, now holds the record for the most runs scored by an Indian hitter in the first over of an innings in Test cricket.
KL Rahul, Jaiswal's partner, also hit a couple of lovely shots for boundaries before being despatched by Scott Boland with a peach of a delivery. The Karnataka batter went for a drive, but the ball took a slight inside edge before returning to the stumps. Boland also had Jaiswal's number, upsetting his off stump from around the wicket.
Jaiswal and Rahul scored 42 runs in 45 balls after India bowled Australia out for 181 in the second session. India will try to post a huge score in their second innings and put the hosts under a lot of pressure.
