Following his guilty plea to a drunk driving charge, former Australian cricketer David Warner’s role as captain of the Sydney Thunder has come under question, according to ESPNcricinfo.
The former Australia opener did not show up before Waverley Local Court on Wednesday. According to the article, Warner’s attorney, Bobby Hill, admitted to a mid-range drunk driving charge on Warner’s behalf following an incident on Easter Sunday.
On April 5, Warner was pulled over by police in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, and a roadside breathalyzer test revealed a positive alcohol reading. After being brought to the Maroubra Police Station for additional testing, his blood alcohol content was found to be 0.104, which is more than twice the legal limit.
Hill previously foreshadowed a guilty plea when the matter was first mentioned in May.
“The parties are in discussion about the facts. He knows what he did was wrong. He accepts that was a reckless decision, a foolish decision to get in his car instead of taking an Uber,” Warner’s lawyer stated as per ESPNCricinfo.
Warner had enjoyed three glasses of wine at a friend’s apartment before making that decision, Hill said.
“It’s not a crime to have a glass of wine on the day of the Lord’s resurrection. In fact, some would consider that completely appropriate. His crime is, as I said, choosing a foolish plan A instead of a plan B,” Hill added.
According to ESPNcricinfo, the Sydney Thunder, Sydney Sixers, and New South Wales Blues are all involved in a government program in New South Wales that aims to increase public awareness of the risks associated with drunk driving.
Warner was detained while traveling home over the Easter break from the Indian subcontinent, where he had captained the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League.
The 39-year-old’s involvement in Australia’s ball-tampering debacle in South Africa in 2018 resulted in a lifelong ban from leadership positions. But in 2024, the ban was overturned, which made it possible for Warner to be named captain of the Sydney Thunder shortly after.
