Delhi Capitals (DC) have named Sourav Ganguly, who led the Indian team to many wins in the past, as the new head coach for the team for IPL 2027. The franchise shared the news on its official social media account on October 6, Tuesday.
At 54 years old, Ganguly will be succeeding Hemang Badani, who was the head coach of the team during the last two editions. Before becoming the head coach of DC, he had worked with the franchise in 2019 as its team advisor and Director of Cricket in 2024.
Sourav Ganguly is being named the head coach of IPL 2027 as JSW will take control from GMR Group as part of their alternate management control.
Ganguly was strongly connected with the franchise’s head coach position in recent months after missing the IPL playoffs the previous two seasons. With the outcomes not going their way, the auction’s planning, tactics, and player recruitment have all come under scrutiny.
“I am looking forward to taking on the role of Head Coach in the IPL. Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years. I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff, and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past. I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team,” Sourav Ganguly said on his appointment, as per the Delhi Capitals website.
The Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are still the only two franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League that have not won the IPL title since its launch in 2008. Neither team made it to the playoffs in the two seasons when Badani was in charge as the head coach.
As a result of Axar Patel’s coaching, the team ended up at number six in the IPL 2026 table, securing seven wins and losing seven matches out of 14 played. The team did not qualify for the playoffs since 2021, ultimately ending up being defeated by the runners-up in the Qualifier.
