On Wednesday, September 2, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the newly updated ICC Test Player Rankings. India’s No.3 batter Devdutt Padikkal rocketed five spots to the 54th spot in the latest ICC Batting Rankings.
Notably, Padikkal amassed 328 runs across two Tests at an average of 109.33 during India’s recent tour of Sri Lanka, emerging as the player of the series after coming to the series as Sai Sudharsan’s replacement in the XI.
Indian Test captain Shubman Gill slipped two spots, and ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah slid one rank. Gill, who scored one half-century on the Sri Lanka tour, slipped to the ninth rank in the batting rankings, while the Indian keeper-batter Rishabh Pant remains the highest-ranked Indian batter at the seventh place. Southpaw batter Yashasvi Jaiswal remains at the 11th rank.
Sri Lankan middle-order batter Sonal Dinusha, who scored two centuries in the second Test in Colombo, surged 29 positions to reach 25th in the rankings for batters.
Delving into the details of the bowlers’ rankings, Bumrah slipped to the third rank with Mitchell Starc and Matt Henry holding the top two positions. England bowler Ollie Robinson surged to the fifth rank after his impressive performances against Pakistan.
Robinson, Player of the Match in both Tests vs Pakistan, grabbed four wickets in each innings to finish with impressive match figures of eight for 35. On the other hand, Josh Tongue picked up five wickets in the match to move up four places to a career-best 13th position, 20 places up in the series.
