Former Indian opening batter Wasim Jaffer has come out in strong support of the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has been under severe pressure of late from the Indian cricketing fraternity.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer has stated that the trophies the Indian team has won speak for themselves, adding that the team has completely dominated the white-ball formats, winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
“I think if you talk about winning, then this tenure has been successful. You are known by your results, so I believe the trophies we have won speak for themselves. If we talk about the way the Indian team has played, especially in white-ball cricket, we have dominated,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.
“If we leave out the 2023 World Cup final, India have won the Asia Cup, the Champions Trophy and then two T20 World Cups back-to-back. So, India has dominated white-ball cricket. But we have that kind of talent, and we have dominated white-ball cricket. So, in terms of performances, you would count this stint as a successful stint,” he added.
Furthermore, Jaffer has expressed his disappointment over a few selection calls made by the Indian team management, stating that they should have given more opportunities to Mohammed Shami, Sarfaraz Khan and Abhimanyu Easwaran.
“But the way some players have been handled and some of the selections that have been made are debatable; there is no doubt about that. There is Mohammed Shami, then Sarfaraz Khan, and we keep mentioning Abhimanyu Easwaran’s name, now Auqib Nabi, who wasn’t selected earlier and has now been selected as a replacement; these are all things that I feel can be discussed negatively. Why are these selections not happening, and why are players not getting clarity?” he concluded.
