Former Indian off-spinner and commentator Ravi Ashwin reckoned that the former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma commands respect in the dressing room and that veteran players like Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah would be comfortable with him being reinstated as the franchise’s captain.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin also revealed the reasons why Bumrah and Suryakumar wouldn’t be aiming for the captaincy baton. Notably, there have been multiple reports that Rohit could become the MI skipper for the forthcoming IPL 2027 season.
“If Rohit can return as captain, he has the respect of the dressing room. Suryakumar Yadav has played under him, and Bumrah has also played under him. I am not sure if captaincy is that much of an aspiration for Bumrah, if I am not mistaken. Suryakumar Yadav is also out of the Indian T20 setup, so maybe he will be fine with it as well,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Further, Ashwin reckoned that it’s not a bad call to have Rohit as MI captain for one year before the team heads to the transition in the new IPL cycle. Rohit captained the Mumbai Indians (MI) in 158 matches, winning 87 and losing 67, guiding the franchise to five IPL titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020).
“What’s wrong with that? This is the last year of this IPL auction cycle or IPL window, after which a mega auction will take place. So, they can have Rohit for one year and then make the transition, right? If they need to find a new captain, they can look for one at the auction next year. I don’t think it’s a bad call. I’m not saying they will do it, but if they think along those lines, it wouldn’t be wrong,” he added.
