Mumbai Indians are making quite a lot of changes in their team management ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Kieron Pollard replaced Mahela Jayawardene as the head coach, and they are also searching for a new captain, especially for the upcoming season.
MI has reached the playoffs just once in the last three years, while their last IPL win came in 2020, under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. Hardik Pandya is no longer seen as a captaincy option, and MI will need to find a new captain, at least for the upcoming IPL edition, before thinking of a long-term solution. Hence, we take a look at why MI should reappoint Rohit Sharma as their captain.
Here are the 3 reasons why the Mumbai Indians should reappoint Rohit Sharma as captain for IPL 2027:
3. No alternative for his experience
Rohit Sharma had become captain of the Mumbai Indians franchise in the 2013 IPL, taking over from Ricky Ponting and leading them to their first IPL title win that season. Since then, MI won four more titles in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Rohit Sharma not only has vast experience of captaining MI, but he also led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup win. He had even captained MI to the playoffs in 2023, despite the team missing both Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer in the pace attack. You can’t ignore the experience Rohit Sharma has, and this is the time it is needed the most.
2. Respected leader
Rohit Sharma has earned the respect of the MI dressing room, and every young and new player that enters the MI setup looks up to him. He has impressed with his captaincy decisions, lifting the IPL twice by winning the final by the margin of 1 run. There were rumors of the MI dressing room being divided into two factions, one supporting Hardik Pandya and one backing Rohit Sharma, when Pandya became captain in the 2024 IPL. This shows Rohit Sharma still commands respect from his fellow players, and they are willing to listen and follow him.
1. Just for one season
MI is looking for a captain who can lead them, probably for the IPL 2027 only, as the 2028 season will have a mega auction, giving them more options to look for a captain. Rohit Sharma will be 40 when the IPL 2027 is played, and he is the best bet for captaincy for one season. MI can make someone like Tilak Varma the vice-captain, and he can learn a lot by seeing Rohit Sharma lead in tough situations before taking over the leadership from 2028 onwards.
