Ruturaj Gaikwad's exclusion from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is a severe setback to the Chennai Super Kings. Many people are surprised to learn that CSK veteran MS Dhoni will now captain the team for the rest of the IPL season. When the usual Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out for the rest of IPL 2025, MS Dhoni became the Chennai Super Kings' captain again for the first time since their IPL 2023 championship run. Stephen Fleming, the head coach of CSK, announced on the eve of their game against the Kolkata Knight Riders that Gaikwad would not be playing in the 18th season due to a fractured left elbow.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is unlikely to play in CSK's next games due to a hairline fracture of his elbow, as is known. Before the home game against the reigning champions, the Kolkata Knight Riders, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming revealed the news on April 10. Except for the two years the team was banned and a few games in 2022 when Ravindra Jadeja took over as captain, which didn't work out, MS Dhoni has been the captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from the franchise's founding in 2008. The last time Dhoni captained CSK, they won and took home their fifth IPL trophy in the 2023 final.

On Thursday, Fleming told reporters in Chennai, “Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out the IPL due to a fracture on his elbow. We have an uncapped player, MS Dhoni, who will take over as the captain in the remaining games. We are disappointed and feel for him. We appreciate the efforts that he has made in terms of trying to play, but unfortunately, he will be out of the tournament."
However, Ruturaj Gaikwad was appointed captain at the beginning of the 2024 season. Due to their net run rate, CSK missed the playoffs and finished the season in fifth place. CSK has had a difficult start to the season. They have only managed one victory, against the Mumbai Indians, and four consecutive losses, dropping them to ninth place in the standings. There are nine games left for CSK, and MS Dhoni will be captaining the squad going forward.
