Ahead of the eagerly anticipated super auction, the IPL teams submitted the final list of their retained players on Thursday. KL Rahul made the decision to quit the Lucknow Super Giants camp and enter the massive auction pool, while Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer concluded their careers with the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively.

There were several unexpected additions, even though the majority of the clubs had perfect retention lists. Many fans, meanwhile, are also unhappy with some retention decisions made by their preferred teams. While some stayed with their core groups, others selected their players in some intriguing ways. These are the IPL 2025 worst retentions.

Worst Retentions of IPL 2025:

3. Abishek Porel (Delhi Capitals - 4 Crore):

The team is cutting ties with veterans David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, and Anrich Nortje in order to retain the young Bengal keeper. The DC management was persuaded of the southpaw's potential by his steady play in the previous season, where he scored 360 runs in 18 games.

The franchise has positioned itself well ahead of the blockbuster auction, with INR 73 crore still in its purse. With the Capitals breaking their nine-year relationship with their former leader Rishabh Pant, Porel may also be given the go-ahead to take over as wicketkeeper.

2. Ravindra Jadeja (Chennai Super Kings - 18 Crore):

Jadeja has done everything for the Super Kings, from bowling economical spells to contributing with vital cameos, and he has been rightfully kept ahead of the huge auction. But given his age and level of fitness, his INR 18 crore price tag is undoubtedly a little shocking. The Super Kings must have been aware that Jadeja, a genuine all-around player, had a problematic knee that had recently hampered his career.

To bolster their problematic top order, the five-time winners could have added Devon Conway or the highly effective Rachin Ravindra. CSK could have saved some cash for the huge auction by paying Jadeja a little less if they hadn't needed the New Zealand pair. As a result, this action is mostly motivated by feelings rather than logic.

1. Dhruv Jurel (Rajasthan Royals - INR 14 Crore):

Before the 2025 Indian Premier League, the Rajasthan Royals made a daring move by paying an incredible INR 14 crore to retain uncapped batsman-wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. Given that the franchise has let go of mainstays like Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Jos Buttler, the decision was unexpected.

However, a person's reputation and statistics must be so important for them to be maintained at INR 14 crores. Regretfully, Jurel's enormous price tag of INR 14 crores is not justified by his stature or numbers. Although he has frequently been in the Royals' starting lineup, the team undoubtedly had at least three capped players—Jos Buttler, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Trent Boult—who were more valuable than the wicketkeeper.

With Jurel joining Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag in their aspirational long-term goal, the franchise has placed a high priority on youngsters. They have already committed INR 79 crore of their money, along with skipper Sanju Samson (INR 18 crore) and Caribbean superstar Shimron Hetmyer (INR 11 crore). Jurel is now under pressure to live up to this audacious investment, with 19 seats to fill and INR 41 crore left.
