Rohit Sharma should have been retained as the ODI captain: Wasim Jaffer

Former Indian batter and analyst Wasim Jaffer has reckoned that veteran Indian opener Rohit Sharma should have continued as India’s ODI skipper. Notably, Shubman Gill took over ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 concluded.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer asserted that the Indian team management should have gone ahead with Rohit as skipper until the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, adding that Gill should have been elevated as the new captain after the mega event.

“Rohit Sharma should have been retained as the ODI captain. He should have also remained the captain of Mumbai Indians. I won’t say the decision was completely wrong, as Shubman Gill has done well, but when you have someone like Rohit Sharma available, he should be the captain. You can always pass the baton to Shubman Gill after the 50-over World Cup,” Wasim Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.

On the other hand, the former Indian opening batter and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his disappointment with Rohit losing his wicket for 92 runs in the third and final ODI against the West Indies, adding that he would love to see more centuries than his age by the end of his career.

“The reason I was disappointed with Rohit getting out on 92 is that he didn’t get a hundred, and he might possibly quit international cricket after the end of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. And at that particular point in time, when he decides to call it a day, I personally would like Rohit to have more ODI hundreds than his age,” Gavaskar told JioStar.

Rohit Sharma will play next in the opening ODI of India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand, scheduled for November 4, 2026, at Eden Park in Auckland.
