Indian captain Shubman Gill, who attended the post-match press conference, has disclosed that they haven’t discussed anything about the Indian opening batting stalwart Rohit Sharma’s retirement ahead of the final ODI at Lord’s.
Speaking at the post-match press conference after India’s 1-2 ODI series defeat, Gill revealed that Rohit hasn’t told him or the Indian team management anything about his retirement plans, sighing in relief to the Indian cricketing fraternity.
“He’s not told us anything. I think it’s all out in the media, but there’s not been any discussion like that in the team,” Gill said at the post-match press conference after the series decider.
Additionally, Gill has lauded the former Indian skipper, Rohit, who smacked an impressive 138-run knock in the 388-run chase. Rohit’s knock included 17 fours and five gigantic sixes at a strike rate of 125.45. However, his knock wasn’t enough as India fell short of the chase by 27 runs.
“I think the way Rohit bhai paced his innings was outstanding. Most of the time, I was at the non-striker’s end just watching him bat. Our discussions were mainly about keeping wickets in hand because that was the only way we could chase such a big total. During the powerplay, we spoke about whether we should go after the bowling or not, but we know it’s not easy to attack against the new ball. The way he paced his innings and then accelerated was exceptional. Once he got into the 60s and 70s, it was truly a treat to watch,” Gill concluded.
After opting to bat first, England posted a mammoth total of 387/3 in 50 overs. Ben Duckett was the top batter with a 141-run knock off 135 balls with 18 fours and a six. Jacob Bethell (91) and Joe Root (74*) were also brilliant with the willow in the first innings.
