Former Indian keeper-batter Deep Dasgupta has asserted that even the Indian captain Shubman Gill’s place in the Indian ODI team will be questioned if the opening batter doesn’t score runs in the next 14 months ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
Speaking exclusively on his YouTube channel, the former keeper-batter has made it clear that everyone, including Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, needs to perform well to be a part of the World Cup plans. However, he reckoned that the batting trio will get a longer rope because of their consistent performances for an extended period of time.
“Everyone has to perform, not just them, with 14 months left for the World Cup. God forbid Shubman Gill doesn’t score runs in the next two series. There will be questions asked even about his place in the side despite him being the captain. So performance is mandatory for everyone,” Deep Dasgupta said on his YouTube channel.
“Yes, some like Rohit, Virat and Gill deserve a longer rope with more chances because of their performances for an extended period of time. So they will get more chances than someone else,” he noted.
Furthermore, Dasgupta has advised the Indian cricketing fraternity not to constantly isolate Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in selection discussions. He went on to state that the duo needs to be given the same space as everyone else in the ODI team.
“There is no need to constantly isolate Rohit and Virat. They will have to perform like everyone else. So it’s not a debate about Rohit and Virat. It’s a debate about everyone, all of whom need to keep performing, with less than a year left for the World Cup. So leave them (Rohit and Virat) alone. Don’t treat them separately,” he concluded.
