Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer was elated after securing his second consecutive T20I series victory as captain. The recent 3-0 series win over Zimbabwe marked his first series triumph as captain, while the ongoing 2-0 series win over Afghanistan has given him his second.
Speaking at the post-match presentation after India’s seven-wicket win in the second T20I against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Iyer revealed that they were aiming a comprehensive win and the second T20I victory was the right example of it.
“I think looking at the last match performance and coming into this one, we were demanding a comprehensive win, and today was the right example of it,” Shreyas Iyer said in the post-match presentation.
Iyer, who took over the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav after India’s T20 World Cup win, suffered away series defeats to Ireland (0-2) and England (0-4) before winning his maiden series as captain on the Zimbabwe tour. Reacting to his tough captaincy start, he added:
“It was a tough pill to swallow at the start, but the (captaincy) journey is always going to be a roller coaster. You need to be in equilibrium as much as possible and see to it that you enjoy the moment and not think much about what has happened in the past. And I have said it in my previous interviews as well: the more you embrace the situation, the better it gets,” he added.
Further, the Indian skipper asserted that the team management would love to test the bench strength in the third and final T20I against Afghanistan, hinting at Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s comeback to the XI.
“We want all of them to get used to the wicket and the conditions and also get some practice. So it would be a nice game to give opportunities to the players, especially those who have been sitting out, and also change a little bit in the combination as well,” he concluded.
