Mumbai Indians (MI) have not won an IPL title since 2020, and under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, the franchise has made it into the playoffs just once. In IPL 2026, MI finished 9th on the points table with their entire squad in disarray.
Mumbai Indians will be waiting for the IPL 2028 mega auction to overhaul their entire squad but will have to make a few adjustments for the IPL 2027 season in the mini auction. There are a few players that MI wants to get rid of to get a decent outing in IPL 2027, and we see which three players MI might let go.
Here are the 3 players MI could release before the IPL 2027 mini-auction:
3. Mayank Markande
Mayank Markande got three games for MI in IPL 2026, but he failed to get a single wicket in the 30 balls he bowled across those matches. Markande made his IPL debut for MI in 2018 and has also played one T20I for India. He has led Punjab in domestic cricket and has 94 wickets in 96 T20 games, but his performances in IPL have been below par. MI might find some other spinner in place of Markande or just play without his services given his performance.
2. Trent Boult
Trent Boult was once royalty of pace bowling in the IPL, but in recent times, since he retired from international cricket, his performances have been iffy in the IPL. He did well for MI in IPL 2025, taking 22 wickets, but in IPL 2026, Boult managed only 2 wickets in 5 games. Boult has his swing in the air but has lost quite a few kilometers per hour in speed. MI will be very tempted to retain him for one more season, but they might also want to let him go and maybe get him for a cheaper price.
1. Deepak Chahar
Deepak Chahar picked 8 wickets in 8 games in IPL 2026, but those wickets came at an economy of 10.39. He had also picked 11 wickets in IPL 2025 at an economy of 9.17, and his inability to bowl economically might cost him his place in the MI squad. MI suffered from a total bowling failure in IPL 2026, with Jasprit Bumrah having his worst IPL ever with just 4 wickets. But it will be Chahar losing his spot for being worse.
