Earlier this year, Axar Patel was named Suryakumar Yadav's backup for the five-match Twenty20 International series against England. He received a reward for continuously doing well in the game's shortest format. The Gujarat all-rounder took six wickets at an average of 16.50 from five games, but he did not impress with the bat. Axar's leadership abilities in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) went on to win over both supporters and detractors. Despite his great leadership, the 31-year-old was unable to lead the Delhi Capitals to the postseason.

Both as a skipper and as a batter, a good tour of England has created a lot of opportunities and sparked intense rumors about Shubman Gill. According to a recent media rumor, Axar Patel may not be included in the Indian T20I squad for the next Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates next month, since Gill will be reinstated as vice-captain by the BCCI.

Asia Cup 2025 Insider:

Gill is expected to be promoted to the position of Suryakumar Yadav's deputy for the Asia Cup, which starts on September 9, in addition to being guaranteed to rejoin the T20I squad. This information was reported on RevSportz.

In the recent five-match Test series against England, Shubman captained India. With 754 runs from 10 innings at an average of 75.40, the Punjab batsman ended the series as the series' top scorer. India squared the series 2-2 with great bravery and tenacity. Remarkably, Shubman hasn't participated in Twenty20 international cricket since July 2024. In 21 Twenty20 Internationals, he has amassed 578 runs at a strike rate of 139.28 and an average of 30.42. Abhishek Sharma's status at the top of the order may be in jeopardy if Shubman returns to the team.
