The injury was sustained by the 35-year-old after he landed awkwardly while fielding against the Melbourne Renegades. According to medical assessments, the southpaw's right elbow has a recurring ligament problem. The Sixers had to look at replacement possibilities for their top-order batting lineup after the injury happened during their season opener against the Melbourne Renegades at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
After a successful stay in England earlier in the year, the 35-year-old had high expectations going into the season. He had undertaken a rigorous recovery process and been given the all-clear to resume playing after breaking his elbow in an October grade cricket match.
Daniel Hughes's BBL 2024 campaign cut short:
But while diving to try to snag Tim Seifert's bat during Monday's game, Hughes damaged his elbow again. Hughes was essentially sidelined for the rest of the season due to the dive's failure and the fact that it put him in too much pain to continue.
Sydney Sixers General Manager, Rachael Haynes said, "While the news is not what we had hoped for Daniel, and we’re obviously incredibly disappointed to lose him for the remainder of this season, we know that he’ll commit himself to his rehab over the coming months, just as he did earlier in the year. A pleasing aspect of our group is that we have players ready to step up at any time and we know that whoever comes into the side will be prepared to play their role. Regardless of whether he’s on the field or not, Daniel remains a core part of our group, and we’ll wrap our arms around him in the weeks ahead."
Players like Kurtis Patterson, who was not selected in the first game despite having excellent form in the Sheffield Shield, may get opportunities as a result of the injury. Lachie Shaw, a player who was initially selected to replace Steven Smith but is only available for a portion of the competition, is another possible contender.
Sydney Sixers squad for the BBL 2024: Ben Dwarshuis, Jack Edwards, Moises Henriques, Akeal Hosein, Hayden Kerr, Ben Manenti, Todd Murphy, Kurtis Patterson, Mitch Perry, Josh Philippe, Jordan Silk, Steve Smith, James Vince, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Jackson Bird
