The Bangladesh Cricket Board announced on Thursday that Mehidy Hasan Miraz will be Najmul Hossain Shanto's deputy for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Tonight, the complete Bangladeshi team will leave for Dubai in order to be ready for their tournament debut against India, the runners-up from the previous edition.
He has been one of Bangladesh's best players lately and has already captained the team in two Test matches and four ODIs. Mehidy had a successful ODI batting season in 2024, scoring three half-centuries and 308 runs from four innings at an average of 38.12. Additionally, the off-spinner used the ball to take eight wickets.
Mehidy has represented Bangladesh in 103 ODIs overall. He recently captained the team while the full-time captain was out with a groin issue during their tour of the West Indies. Mehidy carried the load in the ODIs and Tests, while Litton Das was the captain for the T20I series. In addition to being swept in the ODI series and winning the T20Is with a resounding 0–3 score, Bangladesh went on to draw the Test series.
New Responsibility for Mehidy Hasan Miraz:
Hasan Mahmud and Khaled Ahmed, who will go with the team to Dubai for their match against India, will further strengthen the pace-bowling line. CricBuzz states BCB on Thursday, "Pacers, Hasan Mahmud and Khaled Ahmed will travel to Dubai on Saturday to train with the Bangladesh Champions Trophy squad. The bowlers will return home following Bangladesh's opening match of the tournament against India in Dubai on February 20."
Bangladesh has participated in five of the past eight seasons of the prestigious ODI tournament. They hosted the first edition (then known as the Wills International Cup 1998), however they did not participate in the competition. They made it to the competition's semi-finals in the 2017 edition, which was their best result.
Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and New Zealand are all in Group A. Bangladesh has been assigned to Group A of the eight-team ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is scheduled to start on February 19. They will play their first game against India in Dubai on February 20 to kick off their campaign. The team captained by Najmul Hossain Shanto will next play New Zealand on February 24 and co-hosts Pakistan on February 27.
