Surprisingly, the Chennai Super Kings did not join the Women's Premier League when the competition began in 2023, given how popular women's cricket is worldwide, particularly in India. For the record, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Mumbai Indians, the other two main Indian Premier League teams, have both been considered. The other IPL team with a WPL team is the Delhi Capitals.

They have a long-term goal with MS Dhoni that goes beyond the cricket field, and Kasi Viswanathan made it clear that they will not let him go. His remarks regarding the former captain of India make sense because MS Dhoni is a well-known brand in addition to being a former cricket player, and CSK management is adept at generating revenue. According to Viswanathan, they had a clear goal when they made an investment in a young Mahendra Singh Dhoni back in 2008. At that time, the management was searching for someone who could handle all field charges, freeing them up to start from scratch.

MS Dhoni to Never Retire From CSK?

The Mumbai Indians (2023, 2025) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2024) were the former winners of the WPL, which is currently in its fourth season. Naturally, it would be unrealistic to anticipate the arrival of a CSK women's team before the 2027 season, as it would be premature. Viswanathan agreed, but he made more ambitious promises.

Viswanathan said, "Not immediately, but certainly in the coming years, CSK will expand its footprint. Our first target will be women’s cricket. We may also go into other sports over time." Other teams were vying for the services of the legendary cricket players, but CSK was headed for a long-term, permanent contract. MS Dhoni, who went on to win five IPL titles with the Chennai Super Kings, was their guy.

Additionally, he hinted at a potential Women's Premier League entry by confirming that the Chennai Super Kings' next big move is to invest in women's cricket. He said, “MSD will surely play this season and will be with CSK forever. And the very next step for us will be to invest in women’s cricket. You can be sure of it."
