A pair of half-centuries in the first Test match against England at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch helped the Kiwi legend get one step closer to the coveted 10,000-run milestone in red-ball cricket, making Kane Williamson the first batter from New Zealand to surpass the 9000-run mark in Test cricket.
Williamson also became the third-fastest batter to reach the milestone by touching it. The fastest hitter to reach the milestone was Steve Smith of Australia, who was followed by Brian Lara, the renowned West Indian. Along with Younis Khan and former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, Kane Williamson also became the third fastest player to accomplish the record in 103 games. Notably, Lara needed 101 matches to reach 9,000 runs in the Test format, whereas Smith accomplished the record in 99 Tests.

Williamson passed the milestone with a quick 61 in the third inning after scoring 93 in the first. Virat Kohli surpassed the mark earlier this month in the series against New Zealand, becoming the most recent and last member of the "Fab Four" to do so. Notably, in the game's opening innings, Kane Williamson assisted New Zealand in scoring 348 runs. In addition, Kane Williamson once again came out to bat and produced a fantastic effort after the Black Caps let up 499 runs in the first innings against England.
Williamson became the first player to reach 8000 and now 9000 Test runs for the Black Caps, while Stephen Fleming and Ross Taylors are the other two batters to reach 7000+. He already has a solid resume that supports his claim to be the best player in New Zealand cricket history, and as he keeps scoring runs, he solidifies his position at the top of the list.
