After battling meningitis and being put in a potentially fatal coma, former Australian cricketer Damien Martyn has shown remarkable signs of recovery. After being sent to the hospital on Boxing Day in critical condition, the 54-year-old has now emerged from a coma and is responding well to therapy; doctors are optimistic that he will soon be released from critical care. The improvement has been considered remarkable by his family.

The legendary Australian cricket player, who won the 2003 ODI World Cup and played 67 Test matches, was sent to Gold Coast University Hospital due to a serious illness. His family and partner, Amanda, said he has been "progressing well with his medical treatment." But Martyn "is now able to talk and respond to treatment," according to his close friend Adam Gilchrist, who spoke to Code Sports.

Fans from all over the world, rivals, and former teammates expressed worry after learning of his condition. His family confirmed that he was still under constant medical supervision in the days that followed, but they also asked for privacy. Earlier last weekend, the Martyn family released a statement to the Courier Mail saying, “We would like to thank everyone for the incredible outpouring of support our family has received. We also want to express our deepest appreciation to the medical team at Gold Coast University Hospital, who have been nothing short of amazing throughout this challenging time. This has been a trying time, and the family ask that you respect their privacy."

Martyn will stay in the hospital for additional care and observation. Supportive messages kept coming in from all across the world. Former Australian players Darren Lehmann and Michael Vaughan, as well as former Indian hitters VVS Laxman and Ravichandran Ashwin, were among those who publicly offered their support and prayers.
