Due to a shoulder injury, Melbourne Renegades all-rounder Hayley Matthews will not play in the Women's Big Bash League season 11, the team said Thursday. Matthews was scheduled to play her fourth season in red after being pre-signed by the Renegades before the WBBL Overseas Player Draft. Her WBBL ambitions have been delayed, though, due to a shoulder injury she sustained during the last ODI series against the West Indies.
The West Indies captain missed the two ODIs that followed. She did, however, play all three games in the ODI series against South Africa, which came to an end on Tuesday, June 17. The 27-year-old will not be eligible to play in the eight-team competition; therefore, the Melbourne Renegades will need to find a substitute in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL). The defending champions, Renegades, had signed Matthews as a pre-draft recruit for two years, but just hours before the draft, it was revealed that she would not be available.

Beginning on Friday, June 20, Matthews will play in the West Indies' three-match Twenty20 International series against South Africa. In September, she will also represent the Barbados Royals in the Women's Caribbean Premier League. Since the West Indies did not make it to the world tournament, the all-rounder will then have surgery during the Women's ODI World Cup. After that, she won't be available for the remainder of the year.
Given that Matthews played a major part in the Renegades' incredible comeback last season, her absence is a blow to the team. The team won their first championship at the MCG after finishing last in WBBL 9. She was selected for the WBBL 10 Team of the Tournament after having a career-best season in which she amassed 324 runs at a strike rate of 130.6 and claimed 14 wickets.
