Following the Pakistan Cricket Board's decision to not extend assistant coach Tim Nielsen's contract, Jason Gillespie, the head coach of Pakistan's Test team, is allegedly thinking about his future with the team. After Pakistan toured Australia, Nielsen's contract, which had been signed in August as the "high-performance red-ball coach," expired.

It's interesting to note that Nielsen was hired this August. He was serving as the high-achieving red-ball coach for Pakistan. Following Pakistan's tour of Australia, his contract was up for renewal. ESPNcricinfo said that he believed he was "making good progress" with the team. ย  ย ย

The head coach is extremely unhappy with the choice, which was done without first consulting Gillespie. Gillespie, who had previously commended Nielsen's rapport with the players, was especially irritated by the lack of communication. This follows the general pattern of Gillespie's team duties progressively dwindling over the last many months. He was reduced to a "matchday strategist" after being removed from the Test team's selection panel in October.ย

PCB's Coaching Shakeup:

The PCB asked Gillespie to serve as Pakistan's temporary white-ball coach until theย Champions Trophy. However, they did not accompany this offer with a financial offer. Later, Aqib Javed was named the interim coach. This was yet another element that is thought to have caused tension in the board-Gillespie relationship.ย

Despite Nielsen's availability for the forthcoming trips, the PCB's decision seems to have been impacted by the fact that he is not based in Pakistan. This is in line with a pattern where the PCB has been substituting local coaches for international ones due to discontent with the foreign coaches' stay in Pakistan. Former coach Gary Kirsten, who quit in October, also used this justification.

The conditions of Gillespie's departure are vital, but there is conjecture that he may think about leaving before the South Africa series. The PCB may be required to cover a sizable amount of his contract, which expires in mid-2026 if he is fired. The payment would be far lower, though, if Gillespie resigned.
