Shawn Mendes, a Canadian musician, became viral after he was seen performing at Lollapalooza India 2025 while sporting the Indian men's cricket team jersey that included Virat Kohli's name and signature "18" written on it. On Saturday, March 8, Mendes gave a remarkable performance at Mumbai's Mahalaxmi Racecourse that left a lasting impression. The musician honours Virat Kohli by donning a team India jersey with the word "Virat" on the back in a number of videos and images.
For the unversed, the Indian side will play New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final on Sunday (March 9). Ahead of the match, Mendes may have been expressing support for the squad and its star batsman. After winning the Champions Trophy in 2013, Kohli has been a stalwart for the Indian team once more in an ICC tournament. The men in blue will be looking to win it again. An explosive response from the crowd was sparked by his gesture, which demonstrated his appreciation for Indian culture.

When the video of Mendes wearing Kohli's shirt went viral, fans were ecstatic about the unexpected connection. Mendes remarked, "I am aware that you have a game tomorrow, India. I wish you luck. As supporters cheered loudly I hope it goes well." As he brought the sitar and tabla players onto the stage, he stated, "No matter where I go, music is the one thing that unites (people) in a beautiful way. I've always had such love and admiration for India, India's music, and its musicians here. One of the greatest, beautiful and magnificent cultures... It is amazing... I want to do something special for you guys tonight."
Mendes, who is performing for the first time in India, generated social media sensation before donning the jersey when he spontaneously sang his hit song, Seneorita, in the streets of Mumbai. Mendes was encircled by admirers and was able to finish the act, in contrast to Ed Sheeran, who was stopped a few weeks earlier while busking in the streets of Bengaluru.
Similarly, Coldplay showcased Jasprit Bumrah's Test match jersey on stage during their Music of the Spheres World Tour's India leg, and the fast bowler even made a cameo at the last show in Ahmedabad.
