After Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif demanded the establishment of a new international cricket regulatory body and accused the International Cricket Council of being swayed by Indian political interests, a new storm has broken out in the world of cricket. The comments are made in the midst of growing hostilities between Pakistan and India in advance of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which India and Sri Lanka will co-host starting on February 7.

The Pakistani government declared earlier this week that it has given the national men's team permission to compete in the World Cup, which India and Sri Lanka will co-host starting on February 7. It did not, however, explain the national team's choice to skip their match against India on February 15.

Pakistan Calls For New Global Cricket Body:

The Pakistani government announced earlier this week that it had given the national men's team permission to play in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Without providing a formal explanation, Islamabad concurrently said that the team would not play its planned match against India. In a harsh response, the ICC declared that Pakistan's position was "not in the interest of the global game or the welfare of fans worldwide, including millions in Pakistan." Pakistan's team has already travelled to Colombo to be ready for the competition, despite the uncertainties.

India has substantial influence over cricket since it makes up the majority of the sport's commercial earnings. This financial domination, according to critics, translates into significant leverage within the ICC. The Indian Premier League (IPL), which is managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and is the most lucrative Twenty20 cricket competition in the world, accounts for a significant amount of that revenue. The IPL is expected to generate $1.15 billion between 2024 and 2027, or about 39% of the ICC's total yearly earnings, according to Daily Mirror Online.
