Former Indian keeper-batter and commentator Deep Dasgupta has stated that the veteran Indian opening batter Rohit Sharma’s place in the Indian team should be assessed purely from a performance point of view.
Notably, there were a lot of rumours about Rohit’s international future during the recent three-match ODI series against England. However, Hitman scored a 138-run knock in the third ODI at Lord’s to shut down all rumours.
Most recently, at the BCCI review meeting, Secretary Devajit Saikia had shut down all rumours related to Rohit’s international future. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Deep Dasgupta also echoed the same sentiments.
“What the BCCI secretary said is the right direction. Just keep any x player in Rohit’s place and think of how his place in the side will get decided. If he is performing, he’ll stay in the side. You can’t take a call before every series. Retirement is completely his call. But otherwise, if he’s performing, it’s a straightforward call. Selection has to be performance-based,” Deep Dasgupta said on his YouTube channel.
Further, the former stumper advised the Indian selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to give enough chances to Yashasvi Jaiswal as a back-up opener ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 campaign.
“The next question is how you manage someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has scored two centuries in his last three innings. You also have to give him some game time before the World Cup. It’s important to remember that as well and see if Shubman Gill can play at No.3 in some match so that all three of Rohit, Jaiswal, and Gill play,” he added.
“Gametime for Jaiswal will be important so that if needed in the World Cup, he’s ready to go. It shouldn’t feel sudden if he has to play in the World Cup a month before,” he concluded.
