The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will convene a special meeting to establish standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the next Indian Premier League (IPL) victory parades, following the fatal stampede that marred Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) IPL triumph celebrations. According to reports, the issue is expected to be a major topic of conversation at the BCCI's 28th Apex Council meeting on June 14.
An estimated 2.5 lakh people flocked to the stadium and its environs last Wednesday in an attempt to see their favourite cricket players as an IPL team celebrated winning the title. One of the worst crowd-control disasters in Indian sports history ensued as the overwhelmingly large audience swiftly descended into pandemonium.
IPL Victory Celebration New Guidelines:
On June 3, RCB won their first IPL title. The following day, thousands of people gathered in Bengaluru to celebrate the team's long-awaited victory. However, as a sizable crowd—roughly four lakh people—gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the festivities descended into tragedy. The massive crowd caused a stampede, which killed eleven people and seriously injured fifty-six others. The event's organisation and execution were heavily criticised as a result of the occurrence.
The BCCI has now made the creation of crowd and safety regulations for the upcoming IPL celebrations a key priority after admitting faults in the way the festive event was handled. Confirming the news, a senior BCCI member said to the PTI agency, “The need for formulation of norms for IPL victory celebration will be discussed during the meeting."
Although denying any direct involvement in the incident, the BCCI vehemently denounced it. The necessity of accountability was disclosed by Secretary Devajit Saikia. Given the severity of the situation, the Apex Council has made discussing the celebration of the IPL triumph and the necessity of creating norms a major priority.
