Rahul Dravid's second term as head coach of the Rajasthan Royals has come to an abrupt end as the team has declared that he will not be returning before the 2026 Indian Premier League. The 52-year-old former captain of India was given a multi-year contract on September 6, 2024, but he turned down an offer of a more expansive position at the team after a recent structural review. Both the squad and the supporters are shocked by Dravid's choice.
On Saturday, August 30, the franchise released a statement on its official social media account. It read, “Rajasthan Royals announced that Head Coach Rahul Dravid will conclude his tenure with the franchise ahead of IPL 2026. Rahul has been central to the Royals' journey for many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players, instilled strong values within the squad, and left an indelible mark on the culture of the franchise."

It further added, "Aspart of the franchise structural review, Rahul had been offered a broader position at the franchise, but he has chosen not to take this. The Rajasthan Royals, its players, and millions of fans worldwide extend heartfelt thanks to Rahul for his remarkable service to the franchise"
Rahul Dravid, 52, was given a more expansive role during the recent structural review, the team said in a statement. Dravid, however, declined to take on this new position. From 2011 until 2015, Dravid was a coach and player for the Rajasthan Royals, making significant contributions to the team. After leading India to the T20 World Cup last year, he rejoined the team. However, his second inning was short.
The IPL 2025 performance of the Rajasthan Royals was incredibly poor. The club ended eighth in the standings after only managing four victories in 14 games. Dravid's coaching career was further complicated by the fact that he was largely wheelchair-bound due to a foot injury.
