Hardik Pandya, the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI), was fined INR 12 lakhs for keeping a slow over-rate against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 18th Indian Premier League (IPL) at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.

According to the IPL statement, Pandya was fined Rs 12 lakhs because this was his team's first offense of the season under Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate infractions. In Match 9 of IPL 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj led the Gujarat Titans to an incredible 36-run victory over the five-time champions, causing Mumbai to suffer their second defeat of the season.

Hardik Pandya in trouble?

On March 30, the host team defeated the five-time IPL champions by a score of 36 runs. The right-handed all-rounder had previously missed their team's opening game against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) when Suryakumar Yadav was captain. Due to the same violation, the Baroda batter was suspended from the Mumbai Indians' 2024 IPL matchup with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

The official statement read, “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined INR 12 lakhs." MI, who are now tenth in the standings with 0 victories, will next play the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the reigning champions, on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium.

According to reports, Pandya stated this during the MI-hosted press conference prior to the 2025 Indian Premier League: “I think that is something out of my control. Last year, what occurred was part of the sport. I think we bowled one and a half or two minutes late. At that point in time, I did not know the consequences of what could happen. It is unfortunate, but it is the rule. Now, will they continue with this rule next year? I think it is up to the higher authorities. They can see into it and how it can be done."
