Former Indian World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has stated that the Indian fans should be happy if the Indian batting stalwart Rohit Sharma hangs up his boots from the 50-over format after the Lord’s ODI on Sunday, July 19.
Speaking exclusively to IANS, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain has asserted that Rohit has given the Indian fans so much happiness over the years, and everyone has to bid adieu to the game at some point in time.
“No, let’s say happy. Why sad? He has given us so much happiness over the years. Everybody has to go. Sunil Gavaskar gone, Rahul gone, Anil Kumble gone, Sachin gone. Everybody has to go,” Kapil told IANS.
“So when he goes, we should celebrate his life. What happiness, how much entertainment he has given to the country, not only to the country, but also around the world. We should be happy, why sad?” he said.
“Yes, he has to go one day. I hope if he’s going, he should get a hundred and go,” he concluded.
On Friday, July 17, the BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia revealed that there have been no discussions with Rohit Sharma on him playing his last match at Lord’s. India will lock horns with England in the third and final ODI at Lord’s on Sunday, July 19.
“There are a lot of speculations going on in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia said in a statement to the media.
“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team, and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, the Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” the BCCI Secretary added.
