South Africa will be hosting the ICC World Cup in 2027 along with Zimbabwe and Namibia. The last time the ODI World Cup was played in Africa was in 2003, with South Africa co-hosting with Zimbabwe and Kenya.
Given that they will be playing in home conditions, South Africa is primed to win their first ICC World Cup trophy. Their last ICC title win came in 1998, when they won the ICC Knockout Cup, which is now known as the ICC Champions Trophy. But today, we see why South Africa could be the favourite to win the 2027 World Cup, playing on home soil.
Here are the 3 reasons why South Africa could be favourites on home soil to win the ODI World Cup 2027:
3. Home conditions
South Africa will get tailor-made conditions at home and can bring in their best combination for home conditions. They have a very good record in ODIs at all the venues at home and know the bounce of the different pitches. Proteas players will know how to adapt to different conditions at home and change tactics. Bowlers will relish bowling on surfaces they’ve been playing on for all their lives.
2. Dangerous pace attack
South Africa will brandish a fiery pace attack with Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, and Marco Jansen almost sure to be in the World Cup squad. They also have good backups in Gerald Coetzee, Kwena Mapakha, Wiaan Mulder, and others. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma will want to lean hard on his pacers to make life hell for the opposition batters.
1. Well-balanced batting combination
Not only bowlers, but South African batters will relish playing in home conditions. The likes of Quinton de Kock, Matthew Breetzke, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, Ryan Rickelton, and David Miller will want to take on the opposition bowlers on pitches they’ve grown up batting on. Their batting lineup will be a treat for the home fans and a challenge for the opposition when the 2027 World Cup begins on November 2.
