The Women's Premier League (WPL 2025) final was a rollercoaster of emotions, with the Delhi Capitals experiencing sadness and the Mumbai Indians experiencing delight. After two years, the Mumbai Indians won the WPL title with a thrilling victory of just eight runs at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, March 15.

Marizanne Kapp of DC Women was in tears of shock when her team lost the championship game by a mere eight runs. As colleagues Jemimah Rodrigues and Sarah Bryce attempted to comfort the South African all-rounder, Kapp was crying and covering her face with her palms, unable to process the close loss. Fans have already liked and quoted a video of the event that has been making the rounds on social media.

Marizanne Kapp heartbroken after loss:

In a WPL final, this was DC's third consecutive defeat. They have consistently failed to raise the trophy, even though they have won the league stage and guaranteed a direct berth in the final. On the grandest stage, Captain Meg Lanning and her crew failed once more.

After bowling first in the top match at Brabourne, DC got off to a fast start. Kapp was the ball hero, taking a few wickets during the powerplay to put pressure on MI immediately. The Cape Province-born bowler finished her spell with impressive figures of 4-0-11-2 after bowling all four overs in a row. However, Mumbai reached 149-7 at the conclusion of 20 overs with an outstanding partnership between Harmanpreet Kaur (66 off 44) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (30 off 28).

DC had a terrible start, needing to chase 150 to win. Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma, their openers, went out of the game after three overs. Annabel Sutherland and Jess Jonassen were among the middle-order members who were unable to have an effect. After that, Kapp took over at bat, forming a vital combination with Jemimah Rodrigues and hitting an aggressive 40 off 26 balls. But once Rodrigues left, Delhi found maintaining the necessary run rate difficult.

With her counterattacking 40 from 26 balls, Kapp attempted to keep DC in the hunt, but Delhi lost by a few runs in the last over due to a lack of support from the other end. This was Delhi's third straight final defeat while Lanning was captain.
