Dinesh Karthik, a former India batsman and wicketkeeper, believes that if India does not include Varun Chakravarthy in their Champions Trophy roster, they will be making a "serious" error. Although the 29-year-old Varun has yet to play an ODI for Team India, he keeps getting better in the game's shortest format. In Sunday's second Twenty20 International of the four-match series at St George's Park, the legbreak bowler tangled South Africa in a web, but it was insufficient for India to win the match.

As he has played with the enigmatic spinner for teams like Tamil Nadu and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Karthik has witnessed firsthand how Chakaravarthy has developed. During the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh last month, Chakaravarthy made his comeback to the Indian squad and finished as the team's joint-highest wicket-taker. The 2021 T20 World Cup was his last outing for the Men in Blue.

Dinesh Karthik on social media:

Taking to his official Twitter handle he said, "If India don't pick VARUN CHAKRAVARTHY for the Champions Trophy, then they are making a grave error. Outstanding Bowler he is turning out to be."

At one point, it appeared as though India would easily win the second Twenty20 International after Varun Chakravarthy returned with five wickets. But Gerald Coetzee (19*) and Tristan Stubbs (47*) had other ideas. Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, and David Miller were among the first people Varun bowled. Heinrich Klaasen, the wicketkeeper-batter, was also crucially removed by him.

Varun returned with three wickets in the first Twenty20 International against Proteas in Durban. The 29-year-old then claimed five wickets in the second encounter. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) also just signed Varun Chakravarthy before the next IPL mega auction. Varun returned in 2024 with 21 wickets at an economy rate of 8.04 and an average of 19.14.
