Nicholas Pooran was selected captain of MI New York for the forthcoming Major League Cricket season, just one day after declaring his retirement from international cricket. On June 10, Pooran shockingly announced his retirement from all West Indies game formats at the age of 29.
When Pooran scored a scorching 137 not out in the final against the Seattle Orcas in the inaugural MLC, he was instrumental in New York's victory. Before declaring his retirement, the 29-year-old played 106 Twenty20 Internationals and 61 One-Day Internationals for the West Indies squad.
Nicholas Pooran's New Era:
MINY posted on social media to reveal their new captain. "#NYC Fam, there's a new commander in town - Captain Nicholas Pooran," they wrote as the caption for the X (formerly Twitter) announcement. During the 2023 MLC, Pooran led MINY to the playoffs and the championship game. This followed the injury that kept regular captain Kieron Pollard out. Pollard, however, captained MINY for the entire season last year. Despite losing to the Texas Super Kings in the Eliminator, he guided the squad to the postseason.

On June 13, MI New York will take on the Texas Super Kings to begin their MLC campaign. Following Washington Freedom's victory in 2024, Pooran will be hoping to assist MINY in reclaiming the crown. The Trinidadian has an outstanding team at his disposal, including several players whose skills can alter the course of the match. On Saturday, June 14, MINY will play the Texas Super Kings in the Oakland Coliseum in California to kick off their campaign.
MINY Squad:
Michael Bracewell, Trent Boult, Rashid Khan, Tajinder Singh, Kunwarjeet Singh, Sunny Patel, Heath Richards, Noshtush Kenjige, Ehsan Adil, Naveen-ul-Haq, Rushil Ugarkar, Monak Patel, Agni Chopra, Sharad Lumba, Nicholas Pooran (C & WK), Quinton de Kock, George Linde, Azmatullah Omarzai, Kieron Pollard, Rashid Khan, and Michael Bracewell.
