On Day 2 of the third Test at the storied Lord's Cricket Ground in London on Friday, July 11, Indian captain Shubman Gill was not happy with the state of the ball that was provided as a replacement and gave umpire Sharfuddoula a mouthful. On Thursday, the first day of the Lord's Test, the tourists bowled 17 deliveries with the second new ball. India asked the on-field umpires to check the ball's condition eight overs into Day 2. The ball failed to pass through the hoop when the umpire brought it out. At that point, the second new ball was roughly ten overs old.
India captain Shubman Gill was as overwhelmed as he could be as he spoke to umpire Saikat, holding a Dukes ball in one hand and making several gestures with the other. The 25-year-old captain of India was furious despite the umpire's best efforts to calm him down. The ball change was the unusual stoppage of play following the fourth delivery of England's innings' 91st over and Gill's tirade. It took place following the original second new ball's malfunction.

At first, the Indians were pleased with the call when the umpire changed the ball. Shubman wasn't happy with the ball change, though, as he was seen arguing passionately with umpire Sharfuddoula, who struggled to calm him down. "This is 10-overs old ball? Seriously?" On the Stump microphone, Mohammed Siraj was heard saying.
The fielding team usually doesn't protest about the ball after it has cost them three wickets in the first half-hour of play, but India, for some reason, did so to the umpires, which resulted in a ball change. A gauge test was performed by the umpire, and it was changed after failing. India changed the second new ball after 63 deliveries and three wickets.
Despite the early-morning defeats, the Smith-Carse pairing has helped England put themselves in a strong position. They reached a score of 353/7 at lunchtime. Jofra Archer, who can compete with the willow, has not yet batted; therefore, the hosts will be aiming for a total of 400 or more in the first innings.
