The ICC Test Rankings have seen a notable decline for prominent Indian batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma due to their underwhelming performances in the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant have made significant progress.
Both Kohli and Sharma found it difficult to have an impact at bat throughout the game at MA Chidambaram Stadium. Due to Hasan Mahmud's bowling in the first innings, the Indian captain was only able to score in the single digits in both innings. Virat Kohli scored just six runs in the first innings and 17 in the second, which was a very poor effort. Both players fell five spots in the rankings as a result of their performances; Sharma is now ranked 10th and Kohli is ranked 12th.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's batting struggles:
Despite the losses for the veterans, Jaiswal and Pant's outstanding efforts helped India win the Test match by a commanding 280 runs. In difficult circumstances, Jaiswal's outstanding 56 off 118 balls was vital in stabilizing India's first innings during a top-order collapse. He went up to sixth place in the Test rankings with this knock.
After a two-year hiatus, Rishabh Pant returned to Test cricket and made an instant impression. Although his 39 in the first innings was noteworthy, the conversation of the day was around his sixth Test century in the second.
Other formats also witnessed changes in the rankings update. Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan made his first appearance in the ODI top ten after playing a significant part in their historic series victory over South Africa. Travis Head of Australia advanced significantly as well, moving up seven slots following an outstanding century against England.
