India's new Test captain, Shubman Gill, has been compared by T20 World Cup winner Jos Buttler to both his predecessors, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Virat Kohli's fierce personality propelled India to greater heights, particularly in the red-ball format, as India was the No. 1 Test team for the majority of his tenure as captain. Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, led India to four ICC finals, an Asia Cup victory, a T20 World Cup, and a Champions Trophy title during his captaincy.

Following Rohit's retirement in May, Gill took over as head coach of the Test team. As a result of Kohli hanging up his Test boots, the Punjab batsman now has one of the youngest teams in history. The BCCI is taking a big risk ahead of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, where India hasn't won a series since 2007, by putting their trust in him to perform better than veterans like Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul.

Jos Buttler Praises Shubman Gill:

Buttler, who captained the Gujarat Titans in the 2025 Indian Premier League, claims that Gill is a combination of the two since he adopts a composed manner like Rohit while still acting aggressively on the field like Virat Kohli. The veteran batsman-wicketkeeper claims that while the 25-year-old has absorbed some valuable leadership lessons from the great India team, he also retains his unique personality, which will help him stand out as captain.

Buttler and renowned bowler Stuart Broad discussed this on the For The Love of Cricket podcast. Jos said, "He's a really impressive player and an impressive young man. He's pretty calm and measured when he speaks, but [it's] interesting, I feel like on the field he's got a bit of fight about him; a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit. Kohli [was] that sort of real aggressive [character], really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit [was] a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight. I feel like, from my time knowing Shubman so far, he'll be a bit in the middle. He's obviously learned from those two guys… but he'll be very much his own man."

Buttler also discussed the demands that Shubman Gill will face. He pointed out that the young player wants to keep captaincy and batting distinct, but he would need a lot of assistance to make that happen. Gill will be guiding the Baggy Blues in the five-match Test series against England, with the first Test starting on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds. This will be an extremely difficult first task for Gill as captain of India. In the future, he will strive to establish himself as India's top red-ball player and make a statement.
