After taking a fifer in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25 in Brisbane, Jasprit Bumrah broke Kapil Dev's record. Even if the Indian side is having trouble in the five-match series, the 31-year-old fast bowling star is still setting records. Travis Head's long 152-run innings was followed by a brilliant comeback for the visitors thanks to Bumrah's 5 for 72 statistics. With Mitchell Starc and Alex Carey at the crease, Australia ended the day at 405 for 7. India recovered thanks to Bumrah's enchanted spell on the second new ball. When Bumrah opened the floodgates for the visitors, Australia was 316 for 3.

The Australians scored a massive 445 on the strength of hundreds from Steve Smith (101 off 190) and Travis Head (152 off 160), making the third Test of the series a complete bust for the visitors thus far. The Indian side lost Yashavi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant cheaply on Day 3, therefore their hopes of making an impression with the bat were dashed.

Jasprit Bumrah creates history:

While the visiting squad is struggling to fight out the Australians, one player who has continuously pushed them is Bumrah, who claimed his 12th five-wicket haul in Tests with figures of 6/76 in the first innings of the third Test. Bumrah accomplished this in just his tenth game in Australia, becoming him the fastest Asian to reach 50 wickets. Kapil Dev, who achieved the milestone in 11 games in Australia, was replaced by him.

This was Bumrah's eighth five-wicket haul in SENA nations (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) and his 12th in Test cricket. The first Indian to do so is him. The legendary Kapil Dev, who now has the second-highest number on the list with seven fifers, was surpassed by Bumrah.

Bumrah also joined a long list of cricketing greats who achieved the 50-wicket mark in ten games, such as Sydney Barnes, Harold Larwood, Lance Gibbs, and Tom Richardson. In just eight Test matches, England's Maurice Tate holds the record for being the fastest bowler from abroad to reach 50 wickets in Australia.
