In the first innings of the third Test at The Gabba in Brisbane, the Australian team outperformed the Indian squad. Day 1 was ruined by weather, but Day 2 was entirely the hosts', as they amassed over 400 runs thanks to hundreds from Steven Smith and Travis Head. India was desperate to end the innings on Day 3, but Alex Carey's tenacious strategy made things more difficult.

While India, who felt somewhat favored by the bad weather with the hope of a lingering draw, were frustrated by the hosts and their dominance so far in the Test match, Australia was upset by the rain in Brisbane, which caused constant delays five times in the first two sessions.

Rohit Sharma loses cool:

Carey was determined not to give anything to the Indian pace attack since the squad desperately needed to end the tailender's stay, the final batter to be recognized. When Akash Deep was given the ball in an outside-off bid bowl, he sent it wide off the field, and Rishabh Pant caught it. He was apparently scolded by an irate Rohit Sharma, who asked, "Sar mein Kuch hai" (do you have brains?).

In a stop-start second session at the Gabba, the tourists were reduced to 4 down for 48 runs after the quick bowlers left India reeling. Prior to Josh Hazelwood dismissing Virat Kohli, Mitchell Starc drew first blood by removing Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rishabh Pant left during the weather delay.

KL India needs to reach 245 to escape the follow-on, and Rahul was not out at tea with skipper Rohit Sharma still untallied at 30. India's initial goal was to avoid the follow-on, as additional rain was expected for the rest of the Test. Mitchell Starc took two wickets for Australia, while Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood each took one. It is important to note that the series is tied at 1-1 prior to the Gabba Test.
