After the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the player regulations for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season, including the rules for the mega auction that is expected to take place in November, the five-time champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday breathed a sigh of relief. CSK's biggest worry as the IPL mega auction talks intensified daily was if they would be able to keep MS Dhoni, who had previously stated at an event that the rules of retention would determine his future in the competition.
On Tuesday Dhoni celebrated 16 years with CSK. CSK purchased Dhoni at the 2008 IPL auction for $1.5 million. Up to the 2010 IPL, he was kept at the same salary. He made $1.8 million every season from 2011 to 2013 in the IPL. From IPL 2014 to 2017, he made ₹12.5 crore every season; from 2018 to 2021, he made ₹15 crore per season; and from IPL 2022 onward, he made ₹12 crore per season.
MS Dhoni's IPL Salary:
One of the very few players that have appeared in every Indian Premier League season to date is MS Dhoni. The then-India captain wasn't viewed as a big-name acquisition prior to the 2008 inaugural tournament, but the Chennai Super Kings went all out and paid $1.5 million for him. Another team that was very interested in him was the Mumbai Indians, but they were unable to spend much because they had previously spent a significant amount of money on Sachin Tendulkar.

After being named captain, Dhoni led the Chennai Super Kings to great success in their first three seasons, winning in 2010 and making it to the final in 2008. It was expected that CSK would declare Dhoni as their first retention before to the 2011 auction. He was paid $1.8 million to be kept for the following three years.
The two-time World Cup-winning skipper will be paid INR 12 Crore. This season if CSK decides to keep Dhoni as an uncapped player in 2025. Nevertheless, neither the player nor the franchise have acknowledged this, and additional information is anticipated when CSK makes their retainments public on October 31.
