Former Indian opening batter Sadagoppan Ramesh has cautioned the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise against signing the former England captain Eoin Morgan as their new head coach for the forthcoming IPL season.
According to reports in the Indian media, Morgan is expected to join the CSK franchise for a whopping price of INR 18 to 20 crore. This news has come to light after Stephen Fleming bid adieu to the franchise after associating with them for 18 years.
“If these reports are true, it’s not worth it for CSK to go for him. Even for an upper-tier player, you think twice before signing him for that amount. Franchises think twice about paying so much for even a current in-form player with a long future. When that’s the case, it’s a waste to pay a coach 18 to 20 crores,” Ramesh said on his Instagram handle.
“Even in his own country, Morgan won’t go for so much. Many such coaches have a plan to earn as much money as possible through the IPL,” he added.
Further, Ramesh requested the Chennai-based franchise to appoint the former Australian batter Michael Hussey as their new head coach if they were to appoint an overseas coach. Notably, Hussey is the current CSK batting coach.
“Even if CSK want a foreign head coach, there is Michael Hussey. He was an exceptional cricketer. He was in Fleming’s shadow until now, but I would urge CSK to make him the head coach. Give Hussey complete freedom as head coach and see what happens,” he observed.
CSK, under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, would be aiming to make it big in the forthcoming IPL 2027 after missing out on a playoff berth for the third consecutive year.
