The record for the most Test hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper MS Dhoni is now shared by rising star Rishabh Pant, an Indian batsman and wicketkeeper. Pant made history with his incredible performance in his comeback Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai.
The teenage wicketkeeper, making his Test debut after nearly two years away, did not let down, smashing a spectacular 109 off 128 balls in India's second innings. His sixth century in Test cricket arrived at a pivotal juncture as India sought to solidify their lead in the encounter.
Rishabh Pant creates history:
Rishabh Pant has now tied the record of six Test hundreds as a wicketkeeper held by Dhoni with his century. The speed at which Pant accomplished the milestone adds even more credit to the accomplishment. Pant has tied the record in just 58 innings, whereas Dhoni's six hundred took 144 innings.
Now, he shares the top spot with Dhoni among Indian wicketkeepers with the most Test hundreds, with three more wickets than the next best, Wriddhiman Saha. His six Test centuries since August 2018 have surpassed the tally of three shared by Quinton de Kock, Litton Das, and Mohammad Rizwan, becoming him the highest-scoring designated wicketkeeper since his debut.
Pant's century was important to India's standing in the Test match, not only for personal accomplishments. Pant and Shubman Gill established a strong partnership despite India being at a difficult point in their second innings, with the latter being at 83/3. India's lead reached over 500 runs during their 167-run stand, which not only stabilized the ship but also gave them a dominant position.
With two and a half days of play left, the tourists had a mammoth target of 515 after the hosts declared the innings at 287/4. Watch this space for more cricket news.
