The Gujarat Titans, an Indian Premier League team, are anticipated to undergo a transformation. Torrent, a pharmaceutical business located in Ahmedabad, is set to acquire the bulk of the franchise's stakes, giving the team that started its IPL journey in 2022 a new stakeholder. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has received a formal request from CVC Capitals, a private equity entity that currently owns Titans.
CVC Capital Partners (Irelia Company Pvt Ltd), who acquired the club in 2021, will sell a 67% ownership in the squad to the Ahmedabad-based conglomerate. In order for Torrent Group to assume ownership before the upcoming season, which starts on March 21, the deal is seeking final clearance from the IPL governing council.
Change in Tides for Gujarat Titans?
Because all IPL teams are required to have a three-year lock-in provision, Torrent, which had originally intended to purchase the stakes after two years, was forced to wait for the deadline to pass. The franchise was purchased by CVC in 2022, and the BCCI states that management cannot be replaced before the deadline. On Monday, February 10, the lock-in period will conclude, and CVC Capitals will be able to take a management change.
PTI was told, under anonymity, by an IPL source, "The talks of Torrent Group taking two-thirds ownership (67 per cent) is at an advanced stage. The lock-in period for CVC group as sole owners ends in February 2025 after which they are free to sell the stakesTorrent group is one of the biggest names in the Pharmaceutical sector in India and in 2021 when BCCI invited bids for two new teams, they had shown active interest. Obviously, any change in ownership pattern requires approval from BCCI which is expected to be given in the coming days."
In the auction, Torrent bid INR 4653 crore, and the Adani group also bid INR 5100 crore. However, CVC Capital surpassed both organizations and asserted that it had an INR 5625 crore stake in the Gujarat team. It is reported that the Gujarat Titans team is worth Rs Rs 7800 crores. It won its first IPL title in 2022 and advanced to the finals in 2023, which built up the majority of its fan base. Notably, Ashish Nehra-Vikram Solanki's coaching staff and current Titans captain Shubman Gill will remain with the team.
